Sam Shankland, 18, enters the 2010 U.S Junior Closed Championship second by rating, and his big tournament experience at the 2009 and 2010 U.S. Championship make him the top contender to unseat Ray Robson as the Junior Champ.
Sam won a gold medal for the USA at the 2008 World Youth Championship in Vietnam and is just one performance norm away from his Grandmaster title. The incoming Brandeis University freshman called the 2010 U.S. Championship "his dream tournament for the year," but a disappointing performance has given him even more reason to capture the Junior title and a shot at the 2011 U.S. Championship.
Shankland's chess prowess catapulted in just over a year to earn him the title of International Master. Sam qualified to play in the 2009 U.S. Championship after winning the final match of the Tournament of State Champions. He will need a strong performance to unseat Ray Robson, but his experience and ability make him dangerous competition.
