Congratulations to the U.S. Men's and Women's teams for taking the bronze medals at the Dresden Olympiad.

The Men's team beat out previously unbeaten Ukraine with a 3.5-0.5 massive rout.  According to Team Captain, IM John Donaldson, "We performed over 2700 as a team.  I’ve never been on a team that did this well.”

The Women's team's medal also came by way of Ukraine's performance, but in this case, by them winning.  Ukraine's victory over Poland ensured that the U.S. would take home the bronze.  Individual medals were also won by the women: Anna Zatonskih earned a gold medal for 8 out of 10 on board 2 while Rusudan Goletiani earned silver for 9 out of 11 on board 3.

For the month of December the Beginner and Intermediate classes will be held as follows:

Puttin on the Blitz...

Since the Tuesday Night Blitz Series added an Under prize, 10 year old Margaret Hua has benefited immensely.  In her last two tourneys, she has amassed an impressive 6-4 record taking home clear first in her section both times.  Improving her bank account and her Quick rating over 100 points.  Way to go, Margaret!  At Saint Louis Blitz #19 held on November 25th, Margaret was paired against Nick Karlow in the final round with 1st Place Overall on the line.  She played a tough game, but Nick was just too good on that night winning all five of his games.

Schoolhouse Rook...

The Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis is now a proud sponsor of Saint Louis Junior Football League, commonly referred to as JFL.  Our very own Assistant Manager, Nick Heard, attended the JFL Superbowl on Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club in North Saint Louis.

Final standings for the league can be found here!

In the Club...

Thirty-one players battled it out at the Saint Louis Swiss #6 on November 22nd.  Club member Dan Roberts dominated with a 4-0 perfomance.  With his first place triumph, he broke the 1900 barrier for the first time in his career.  Kansas City resident Bob Holliman took home the master/expert with a 3.5  score.   He drew class A winner Nick Karlow who also finished with a solid 3.5 score.   Now, Nick is just 7 points away from becoming an expert.  Two youngsters with rapidly improving ratings split the Class B prize.  Giant Killer Jialin Ding had another impressive turnout finishing 3-1 losing only to expert Waldo Odak.  This was Waldo's first appearance at the new club and a profitable one.  He also finished 3-1 good for second in the master/expert division.  His only loss was to champion Dan Roberts in round 3.  Isaiah Gadson won the other half of the Class B prize with a fanatastic touney.  He defeated two "A" players to blast his rating up to 1747!

The Chess Club staff braved a day of rock climbing at Upper Limits Rock Gym and Pro Shop on Monday, November 24, 2008.  It was a great opportunity for the new team to work together in a less than familiar environment.

It has been brought to the attention of management that chess pieces from the boards throughout the club have gone missing and some of the boards have been vandalized with graffiti.  We would like to stress that the chess boards and pieces are provided for your use inside the club.  Please help us to keep them clean and available for all to enjoy.

In addition, we would like to inform all members that the staff kitchen in the basement of the club is for staff use only and off limits to members.  While we know that during tournaments and events, kitchen accessibility is convenient, unfortunately we ask that you please refrain from using the staff kitchen.  Thank you!
