Designed for intermediate players in the 1200 to 1600 range, this series of lectures will give you a better understanding of the game in general, including openings, middle games, and end games. 2004 Class C Missouri Champion Alex Marler leads this class through the complications of the game of kings! Each week has a different focus:
Week 1 - Endgames
* The lowly Pawn
* Pass the pawns
* Breakthrough!
* Don't get Rooked
o Lucena position, and other dead people
o 3rd rank defense
o Last rank defense - Hail Mary
o There's nothing funny about Rook activity
Week 2 - Openings
* Development is king
* Center yourself
* Hyper-what? Classical control, and Romance
* I love it when a plan comes together
Week 3 - Middle Game
* Knights and Bishops, and Rooks oh-my!
* Pawns are born free, yet are everywhere in chains
* Piece domination and 7th rank penetration
* Space - the final frontier
* On-side kick - minority attacks and kingside attacks
* Castling isn't just for breakfast anymore
Week 4 - Annotated Games
* A collection of illustrative games designed to reinforce the principles from the previous three weeks.
After completing this intensive study of intermediate tools, you will be better prepared to enter a tournament and hold your own against most people.
This class is designed for individuals with a moderate knowledge of chess. Upon successful completion, students will be better prepared for more advanced one-on-one lessons.
